Preliminary autopsy results show that a 23-year-old and her newborn baby died from complications from the birth. Reports from the state medical examiner's office verified that Erin Fitzpatrick died from childbirth complications, said Sgt. Ken Hampton, public information officer of the Smyrna Police Department Thursday. Test results showed Fitzpatrick's infant son was stillborn. Police received a call Tuesday from Torrence Lee Brooks, 19, who said Fitzpatrick, his girlfriend, was passed out in the bathroom of their Terrace Inn apartment on Joyner Drive. When officers arrived, they found Fitzpatrick dead and her baby's body inside a plastic bag, Hampton said. Police questioned Brooks because several hours had passed since her death and the time officials were notified, but determined no foul play. A New York native, Fitzpatrick had lived in Tennessee since February.
