A 19-year-old skateboarder died Saturday night at The Queen's Medical Center after being struck by a car in Kapolei, the third pedestrian killed on West O'ahu roadways in an eight-day span since Feb. 25.

The medical examiner's office yesterday identified the man as Michael P. Santos of 'Ewa Beach. Santos was pronounced dead at 11:11 p.m.

Police vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. Lorenzo Ridela said Santos was hit by a 1999 Saturn sedan on Farrington Highway, 59 feet east of Papaiaulu Avenue. Santos, who was wearing dark clothing, was not in a crosswalk and was crossing the road against a "don't walk" sign. The incident was reported to police at 9:40 p.m.

A 34-year-old man driving the car was not injured. Speed did not appear to be a factor, Ridella said.

Pedestrians have accounted for five of O'ahu's 14 traffic deaths this year and eight of 28 traffic deaths statewide. In 2005, 33 of 138 traffic deaths in Hawai'i were pedestrians.
