Ahmed Slim, an 18-year-old Dearborn man, was killed in a car crash about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and an 18-year-old Dearborn woman was critically injured.

Slim, who graduated from Fordson High School June 10, was driving a silver 2001 Volkswagen Passat eastbound on Warren Avenue when he was struck by the woman, who was driving a gray 2000 Lincoln LS westbound.

Witnesses told police the Lincoln crossed the left turn lane near the intersection of Warren Avenue and Payne, just east of Greenfield Road, and hit the Passat head-on.

Oussama Baydoun, 12th-grade assistant principal at Fordson, said Slim was "the kind of student that, as a teacher, you''d want to duplicate and have 30 of. He was a pleasure to have in class."

Baydoun also said that while Slim wasn''t a "big man on campus," he had a small, tight-knit group of friends.

"He was an extremely nice kid," Baydoun said. "Always had a kind smile."

As is the Muslim tradition, the funeral for Slim was held Thursday, within 48 hours of his death. A remembrance ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. tonight at the Islamic Center of America, 19500 Ford Road.

A 17-year-old female passenger in the Lincoln and five male teenage passengers in the Passat, all from Dearborn, were injured and transported to Oakwood Hospital. The 17-year-old girl and two of the five boys in the Passat were listed in stable condition on Friday, while three boys, including Slim''s 15-year-old brother Ali, were treated and released. Because they are juveniles, police are not releasing their names.

All the passengers in the Passat attended Fordson.

"For the most part (the students) been very good about it (the accident)," Baydoun said about Slim''s classmates.

Baydoun said that social workers were staff employees who were available to help students deal with their grief. He said Slim''s girlfriend was also his best friend and she was having a hard time dealing with his death.

The driver of the Lincoln was transported to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit where she is in the intensive care unit and listed in critical condition. Police said she had undergone surgery but declined to elaborate further on her injuries. Police are not releasing her name pending possible criminal charges.

Cpl. Richard Massic said they have no indication that drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash. Massic said they had no estimates of the speeds of the vehicles, as the investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact Dearborn Police at (313) 943-2241.
