Three teenagers were killed and two are in critical conditon after their vehicle veered off Louisiana 16 and struck a tree 4 miles west of Sun Sunday.

State Police said the group of high school students -- one boy from Archbishop Hannan, one from Andrew Jackson and three girls from Chalmette High, ages 16 and 17, were heading home from a tubing trip on the Bogue Chitto River when the crash occurred at about 4:50 p.m.

The 17-year-old driver, whom police said may have been driving drunk, died overnight at Lakeview Hospital. He was identified as Brian James Lafontaine. Cherie Billiot, 16, was pronounced dead at the scene, while Rachel Gabb, 16, died at LSU Medical Center in Bogalusa.

Two others, Chrissy Billiot, 15, and Ryan Wiltz, 16, were critically injured.

Chrissy and Cherie Billiot are sisters.

Sgt. John Hartzog said highway marks indicate that Lafontaine swerved from the center lane to the right, then left and across the road, striking a tree between the driver's door and the front tire. Only one of the passengers was wearing a seatbelt.

Trooper Kevin Allen said Chrissy Billiot told him alcohol was a factor. Toxicology reports are pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
