A 22-year-old mother is dead, and the coroner is investigating carbon monoxide poisoning as the cause.

The woman, her husband and their young son were found inside their Newburg home Wednesday night in the 5000 block of Delaware Drive.

The family was without electricity, so their landlord brought over a generator for them to use, not thinking they would ever run it inside.

"I had a bad feeling. It was in my gut. I wish I would have came earlier. You don't know how bad I wish I could have known earlier," said landlord Dale Kenton. "It may have maybe saved her life."

The coroner said it appears Kristen Estes died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

"At 7:30, I called him and he answered the phone and he was delirious," Kenton said. "And so I rushed right over here bringing my wife, who is an RN."

Kenton said Estes was already gone, and her son and husband were in bad shape.

"We went in and carried the kid out and I just grabbed him by the feet and drug him out," said Kenton.

The father and son were transported to the hospital with what police call non-life-threatening injuries.

Kenton said since the family was without power, he let them borrow a generator, but never felt their lives would be at risk. A warning is now being sent out to residents across the community.

"Never use a generator indoors or anywhere around your home, in a garage, in a basement or anywhere else, because it does produce carbon monoxide," said McMahan Fire Chief Paul Barth. "It's a colorless, odorless gas, and until you are affected by it, you don't know that you've even had that come into your body. You will start having headaches, start feeling nauseas and then next thing you know you'll be unconscious."

The coroner said even though it appears Estes died from carbon monoxide poisoning. They are waiting for a toxicology report to be sure.

There is no word on the husband or son's condition, but again police say as of last night it appears they were going to be OK.
