A 19-year-old Delton Kellogg High School student died Wednesday after being in critical condition from a Monday evening car accident, police say.

Joshua Groff was a passenger in the van that crashed as it was entering Barry Township on M-43 near Sprague Road. The driver of the vehicle, Mitchell Chapman, remains in critical condition at Borgess Medical Center.

The van swerved off the right side of the road, traveled 700 feet, crossed the highway and slammed into some trees, according to police.

Acting police chief Christopher Martin told 24 Hour News 8 on November 17 their investigation found no evidence of alcohol, drugs, speeding or vehicle malfunction. There were no witnesses, and nothing, he said, to help them conclude what caused this accident.

The best hope is that Chapman, who remains hospitalized, will be able to recall the crash. Neither was wearing a seatbelt, Martin said.
