A 19-year-old Antioch man who was on life support after being shot in the head Wednesday night has died from his injuries, the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office said.

Demonte Hayes died Thursday afternoon at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, the coroner's office said.

Hayes was with a group of friends on the 800 block of Carpino Avenue about 9:40 p.m. Wednesday when someone shot at them as they left the area in a minivan, police said.

A bullet shattered a window and struck Hayes, who was riding in the rear of the vehicle. No one else was injured by the gunfire.

The two men and two women who were with Hayes went to the Pittsburg Health Clinic on Loveridge Road seeking

Police have been tight-lipped about details of the shooting, but said that it does not appear to be random. Lt. Brian Addington said Thursday that investigators have "some very promising leads" in the case.
