A 19-year-old town resident who died in January was killed by an accidental heroin overdose, according to a spokeswoman for the state's chief medical examiner.

Shane Condon, a University of Vermont freshman and former Nonnewaug High School basketball and cross-country captain, died at a friend's house Jan. 17.

At the time, his father, Vin Condon, said a family doctor told him that medication Shane took to control panic attacks by slowing his heart rate might have been too strong.

Condon said his son stayed up to about 4:30 a.m. playing video games with friends while home on a break from school.

Preliminary autopsy results in January were inconclusive, but laboratory tests showed Shane Condon died of heroin toxicity and that the manner of death was accidental, the spokeswoman said.
