A 16-year-old Dalton girl died at Lake Winola after she was thrown from a boat that hit a barge Friday afternoon, authorities said.

The body of Delaney Sandercock, a student at Lackawanna Trail High School, was pulled from waters 50 feet deep after a search that lasted nearly four hours, Wyoming County Deputy Coroner Eric Kukuchka said.

Delaney's father, who was driving the 18-foot runabout boat, was taken to Community Medical Center with "significant" injuries, authorities said. Also suffering "significant" injuries was Delaney's 13-year-old brother, who was flown to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, said Kadin Thompson of the state Fish and Boat Commission.

Delaney's father is Gregg Sandercock, according to Times-Tribune archives. His name and her brother's name were not officially released.

Another person on the boat was not hurt, said Mr. Thompson, a waterways conservation officer and lead investigator. The driver of the dock repair barge also was uninjured, according to officials on scene.

The collision happened about 1 p.m. Two dive teams from Tunkhannock and Germania Hose Company were called to search the lake. Divers from Scott Twp. and the Luzerne County sheriff's department also were brought in.

Lake Winola Fire Chief Marty Bonifanti called it a "terrible situation." Delaney's body was ultimately found not far from the crash, he said.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning at Moses Taylor Hospital, Mr. Kukuchka said.

People who live on the lake gathered in their backyards to watch the search. One neighbor, Ellen Wengen, said she heard the collision and came outside. She watched as several residents paddled out onto the lake to try to help before emergency crews arrived.

"There were a few heroes here today," she said. "The whole thing, it's a real shame."
