A 17-year-old student from Hays High School died over the weekend after falling off a golf cart in Kingsland.

According to Department of Public Safety officials, Alyssa Marie Bargsley, 17, of Kyle was standing on the back of a golf cart driven by another teen on Laramie Trail in Kingsland about 7 p.m. Saturday.

The driver was swerving back and forth, officials said, and hit a bump in the road, which caused Bargsley to fall and strike her head on the pavement. Helicopters were sent to the scene, but Bargsley died at the landing zone, officials said.

The driver of the cart was not injured, officials said.

Julie Jerome, a spokeswoman for the Hays school district, said a vigil was held Tuesday night at Buda City Park.

The incident is being investigated by the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission because alcohol is thought to have been a factor in the death, spokeswoman Carolyn Beck said. She said the agency is trying to find out where the alcohol came from and who provided it to the minors.
