Funeral services are being held this morning for a married mother and emergency medical services worker who was killed Thursday in a head-on auto crash near Four Oaks.

Funeral services for Elizabeth Ann Marie Mitchell, 24, of Selma will take place at 11 a.m. inside the chapel of the Parrish Funeral Home, also in Selma, Kenneth Mitchell, the victim's father in-law, said Monday night.

Elizabeth Mitchell was riding home from her job with Garner emergency medical services Thursday afternoon when the car she was riding in collided head-on with another car on U.S. 301, near Four Oaks, authorities reported.


The woman's husband, Troy B. Mitchell, 37, of Selma, was also injured in the crash, the N.C. State Highway Patrol reported. He is in good condition at WakeMed in Raleigh, a spokeswoman said today.

Elizabeth Ann Marie Baker Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene, her father in-law said.

"It broke her neck," Kenneth Mitchell, 69, of Selma, said. "Matter of fact, my son told the doctor at WakeMed that it took his heart out. He looked at her take her last breath."

Kenneth Mitchell said he last saw his daughter in-law Thursday morning when she left for work with her husband, who drives a dump truck for a local construction company.

Elizabeth Mitchell volunteered as an emergency medical technician with Selma EMS, said Selma Fire Chief Phillip McDaniel. She was known to friends and family as Beth.

"She loved it," Kenneth Mitchell said about her work as a volunteer. "She loved it to death."

Elizabeth Mitchell is survived by a five-year-old son, Nicholas, and a three-year-old daughter, Jasmine.

Alcohol, speed and the improper use of seatbelts were all ruled out by the investigating troopers as contributing factors in the crash, the patrol reported.

The head-on collision occurred Thursday, just before 4:30 p.m. on U.S. 301, about three miles south of Four Oaks, said Sgt. Jorge Brewer with the N.C. State Highway Patrol.

A 2003 Nissan, driven by Lisa Marie Angeles, 37, of Four Oaks, was traveling south.

A second vehicle, a 1996 Ford, occupied by the Mitchells was traveling north in the opposite lane of the highway, Brewer said.

The Ford crossed the centerline and crashed head on into the Nissan, the patrol reported.

The Highway Patrol did not say if Angeles was transported to an area hospital for treatment after the accident.

Criminal charges may be filed after the investigating trooper consults with the Johnston County District Attorneys Office, Brewer said.
