19-year-old Kevin Imura was killed Sunday night after the motorcycle he was riding crashed into another motorcycle. Imura and an estimated twenty others were practicing tricks in an undelevoped Rancho Cordova subdivision when the crash occured.
As police process the evidence, the other riders have some processing of their own to do.
"Each one of us... We got a real reality hit. We gotta think twice about everything. I told myself: I'm not riding anymore. Physically can't. Mentally can't," said Romel Barlett, still walking with crutches as a result of the accident.
Bartlett was the other rider. He's the one who got hit when 19-year-old Kevin Imura, a close friend, lost control in close quarters.
"He was a good friend. He showed me examples," Bartlett said.
Imura's fellow riders gathered at the scene of his death for a late-night vigil. They are looking for a way to understand what happened. They are looking for a way to say goodbye.
"We had gone on a ride to Tahoe a couple weeks ago. I kinda got to know him that way. He was a real good kid," said Brian Oates, a fellow rider.
"He wasn't a reckless kid that came out to street race and kill himself," said Jordan Mcgriffirving, Imura's best friend. "That was not the case. That's not who he was. That's not what he was about. He came out here to get experience. He was a very talented rider."
Meanwhile, police and prosecutors still haven't decided what to call Imura's death - an accident, or a crime.
"It was just... all I did was made a U-Turn? look Up?. That's all I did was look up and this guy's flying right at me," Bartlett said.
One police theory has Imura racing another rider at the time. But Imura's friends continue to insist they've got it wrong.
"Very good kid," said Mcgriffirving. "Very smart. Very ambitious. Very outgoing. He was a good person. And instead of trying to judge him based on what you've heard, just understand that he was a good person, and accept him for that."
