A Georgetown teen was killed on the Black River and a North Carolina man was saved from drowning in North Myrtle Beach in separate incidents on the water Saturday, authorities and witnesses said.

Allison Howell, 18, and a friend were riding in an inner tube being pulled behind a boat Saturday on the Black River in western Georgetown County, said Coroner Kenny Johnson. When they neared the Dunbar Road bridge, the driver turned the boat around, but the inner tube swung into a piling, injuring Howell and her friend.

Howell died at Georgetown Hospital at 4:26 p.m., Johnson said.

In North Myrtle Beach, a distressed swimmer was pulled from the water by a passing boater, whose own boat capsized during the rescue attempt.

C.P. Parker of North Myrtle Beach said he and his wife and daughter were returning from a Waites Island outing to Cherry Grove beach when they passed three men swimming across the inlet. Parker said he dropped his wife and daughter off in the surf and went back out to rescue one of the swimmers, who was struggling. As Parker struggled to control his Carolina Skiff while holding on to the man's arm, a wave capsized the boat, Parker said. Parker tied the man to a woman's personal watercraft and sent them back to shore.
