A Panama City Beach man was killed in a single-vehicle accident early Friday on Back Beach Road.

Robert T. McKerring, 26, died in the 3:30 a.m. crash, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release. Another man, 25-year-old Alexander P. Register, of Panama City, sustained minor injuries. Troopers said they do not know which man was driving the 1994 Corvette at the time of the wreck.

According to the release, the Corvette was traveling east on Back Beach Road, also known as U.S. 98, near Lyndell Lane when the driver lost control of the car on the rain-slicked road. The car began rotating, entered the south shoulder of the divided highway and struck a concrete wall and utility pole. McKerring was ejected during the collision, and Register fled the scene on foot, according to troopers.

Authorities learned Register was involved in the wreck when he showed up for treatment at Gulf Coast Medical Center, the release stated. Troopers said they are still investigating the incident.

Neither man was wearing a seat belt, according to the FHP report.
