An accident Saturday on Interstate 57 claimed the life of one passenger and left another with major injuries, Illinois State Police District 13 reported. Police said Tesse J. Carman, 29, of Forsyth, Mo., was attempting to do a U-turn on the highway by using a median crossover and pulled into the southbound lanes into the path of a vehicle driven by Lucien A. Charland, 18, of Ingelside. Both passenger vehicles were heavily damaged.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts and had minor injuries; they were taken to Heartland Regional Medical Center. April E. Czekala, 23, of Branson, Mo., a passenger in the Carman vehicle, was not wearing a seat belt and was fatally injured. Lucien A. Charland, 71, of Ingelside had major injuries and was taken to St. Louis University Medical Center.
Carman was cited for disobeying a traffic control device, police said.
