A 17-year-old boy died early Sunday morning after crashing during a street race with a friend in Richmond.

The two cars were speeding east on rain-slicked Richmond Parkway near Goodrick Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. when a Nissan Altima driven by 21-year-old Israel Gomez went out of control and hit the BMW driven by his friend, Pablo Jaime, said Richmond police Sgt. Al Walle.

The BMW flipped several times and hit a pole, Walle said. Jaime died at the scene, and two passengers -- a male and a female -- were taken by helicopter in critical condition to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

The passengers' identities and conditions were not immediately available Sunday, nor were Gomez's and Jaime's cities of residence.
Police arrested Gomez, who initially told police a third car had caused the accident, on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was not seriously injured.

Richmond Parkway will remain closed in both directions between Goodrick Avenue and Parr Boulevard until at least 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Walle said.
