A Grass Valley high school student died late Wednesday when a Jeep he was riding in rolled over in the Parks Bar Recreation Area in Yuba County.
Tyler Balke, 18, of Grass Valley, was with four friends in a 2001 Jeep in a gravel area under the Parks Bar Bridge on Timbuctoo Road at about 9:30 p.m., when the driver, Tye Casto, 19, of Penn Valley, made a hard left turn around a concrete support pillar for the bridge.
At the time, according to the California Highway Patrol, Balke was sitting on the right rear passenger window ledge and was halfway out of the vehicle when the turn caused it to roll to the right, on top of him.
Balke died of internal injuries at the scene, according to the CHP, while the three other passengers, Joshua Danckert, 19, and Trevor Martin, 18, both of Grass Valley, and Zachary Burch, 22, of Marysville, and Casto were uninjured.
Alcohol was not considered a factor in the accident, but is still being investigated with the passengers.
Casto was the only person in the vehicle who was wearing a seat belt when the accident happened, according to the CHP. Balke attended two years at Nevada Union High School and was recently attending the Park Avenue Alternative Education Center in Grass Valley.
Student Assistant Resource Services representatives and grief counselors were at Nevada Union all day Thursday, where some of Balke's friends were students.
