Matthew W. Sly, age 40, of New Era, passed away Monday, May 28, 2012 after an A.T.V. accident in Mecosta County. He was born September 5, 1971 in Lansing to Lawrence and Diana (Pearson) Sly. Matt lived in Lansing until the age of five when he moved to Ludington. He graduated from Ludington High School in 1990. Matt traveled on various jobs, among them was working for the National Forest Service as a fire fighter. His home base was Manistee during those traveling years. He got his start in radio and was currently an account executive for Clear Channel Communications. He enjoyed many, many activities. He helped coach his daughter Megan's sports teams. He enjoyed his family and "Daddy" times. He was an avid outdoorsman, doing all kinds of hunting and fishing. He loved music, concerts and the rodeo. He was a sound technician for the Shoreliners Gospel Quartet and area theaters and musical groups. Matt loved snowmobiling, a.t.v.'s and boats. He was a "motorhead". Matt married Laura Nordin on May 7, 2004. They lived in Grant Township in Oceana County. He attended Rothbury Community Church. He is survived by his wife, Laura; his daughters, Jessika Sly and Megan Sly; his parents, Diana and Walt Wells; grandmother, Doris Pearson; brother, Joshua (Lacie) Sly; sister, Laura (Gary) Hardenburgh; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his beloved dog, Cobi Jo. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence. Visitation is Friday, June 1, 2-4 and 6-8 pm at Harris Funeral Home in Shelby. The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 2, 2 pm at Rothbury Community Church with Pastor James Enns officiating. Memorials to the Ravenna Conservation Club, 2530 S. Slocum Road, Ravenna MI 49451 or Shelby Middle School, Matthew Sly Sousaphone Fund, 525 N. State Street, Shelby, MI 49455, are appreciated. DIRECTIONS to the church: Take US 31 to the Rothbury-Winston Road exit (exit 136) and go east on Winston about 1 and 1/2 miles to the flashing red light at Oceana Drive. Continue east on Winston approximately 3/4 mile to the church on the left side of the street at 2500 W. Winston Road.
