An autopsy has confirmed that a Brant Lake man found dead late Saturday in a Horicon pond drowned.

The Warren County Sheriff's Office is awaiting the results of toxicology tests that will show whether alcohol or prescription drugs could have played a part in the death of Jason Konazewski.

Konazewski, 25, went under when taking a dip in the pond at about 10 p.m. during a fishing outing with friends, officials said.

He told the friends he was with that he wanted to cool off with a swim, and he stripped down to shorts.

Horicon Fire Chief Jim Hayes said Konazewski's friends heard him cough a few times as he swam out but he did not yell for help, and when he did not respond to them they called for help.

Horicon Fire Department divers were able to locate him based on witness accounts of where they had last heard him, Hayes said.

The Sheriff's Office initially reported that the pond is on the property of Wakonda Family Campground. The campground owns land next to the pond, but Konazewski and his friends did not get to the pond through the campground.

Sheriff's Lt. Steve Stockdale said an autopsy confirmed that Konazewski drowned, but there was no timetable available for toxicology tests.

Police believe he had been drinking, but do not believe he had been drinking to the point of intoxication. He may also have been taking prescription medication, police said.

Konazewski, a 2005 graduate of North Warren High School, was an avid outdoorsman and fisherman who had worked as a landscaper.

Funeral services for Konazewski have been set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at North Brant Lake Cemetery.
