A motorcyclist was killed in a crash early Thursday on Highway 24 near Orinda, according to the California Highway Patrol.

David Schafer, 22, of Oakland, was headed westbound on Highway 24 near the Orinda exit when he crashed around 1:30 a.m. Preliminary reports suggested he was then run over, a dispatcher said.

The motorcycle was found in the right-hand lane, and Schafer was two lanes over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP closed all westbound traffic for about an hour, then reopened two lanes at about 2:45 a.m.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
