A 20-year-old Hesperus woman was killed Friday in a single-car crash southwest of Durango.

The woman was identified as Cassandra M. Martin.

The accident was reported at 1:27 p.m. near milepost 9 on Wildcat Canyon Road (County Road 141), about two miles east of the intersection with La Plata Highway (Colorado Highway 140).

Martin was driving a blue 1996 Subaru Outback westbound when she apparently became distracted by an electronic device and drifted to the left side of the road, said Trooper Jonathan Silver, with the Colorado State Patrol.

Silver said Martin received a call on her cellphone at 1:25 p.m. – two minutes before the accident was reported. The official cause of the accident remained under investigation, he said.

Martin overcorrected, swung back into the center of the road, and overcorrected again going off the left side of the road and down a 12-foot embankment. The vehicle rolled twice.

Martin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected and died on scene.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected.
