Elizabeth Vargas of Attleboro was killed Sunday morning when her car struck a pole on West Main Street in Norton.

Vargas, 37, was driving home after working an overnight shift in Carver, according to police.
Norton police and firefighters responded to report of a serious car accident at about 7 a.m. in the area of 159 West Main St. (Rt. 123).

Upon arrival, officers found a single vehicle involved in the crash. The vehicle had struck a utility pole. The pole was sheared off at the base.

Vargas, who lives on James Street in Attleboro, was the only occupant of the car. She had suffered serious trauma from the crash, was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital by Norton-Fire Rescue and was pronounced deceased at the hospital, police said.

West Main Street was closed for a short time due to the crash. Utility companies remained on scene to repair the pole.

The incident remains under investigation by Norton police detectives and troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit.
