Henrico County police were not releasing any suspect information after finding a 21-year-old man apparently shot dead in the Essex Village apartment complex early Wednesday.

Police were called to the 100 block of Engleside Drive near Richmond International Raceway about 4 a.m. after residents reported hearing gunfire.

One resident said Wednesday that he heard at least a dozen shots.

Police said the victim is Orlando Isaiah Baylor, 21, who formerly lived in Petersburg but lived off and on in the Richmond area, said his mother, Candace Baylor.

"He called me Sunday and wished me happy Mother's Day," she said, fighting back tears. "I don't know what to think. I don't know what happened."

Baylor attended George Wythe High School in Richmond and had been taking courses at the Adult Career Development School on West Leigh Street in the city, according to a cousin and the mother of Baylor's 1-year-old daughter, Nevaeh. They said Baylor had just applied for work at an area tire dealer.

Baylor apparently had left his cousin's apartment to pay a debt after he got word to meet someone outside the apartment, according to his cousin.

"It looks like he lost his life over $50," said Denise Williams, the cousin.

Baylor's death is apparently the first homicide at Essex Village since that of John E. Williams II, who was shot during an apparent robbery attempt in July 2010. A man was acquitted in that case in September.

In another shooting case in Essex Village, a Henrico woman pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter this year in the death of a 19-year-old man during a game of Russian roulette.

Anyone with information about Baylor's death is asked to call Henrico police at 501-5000 or Crime Stoppers at 780-1000.
