A Madison man was killed Saturday afternoon when his car flipped, a state trooper said.
Joel McAlister Smith, 28, was pronounced dead at the scene four miles north of Athens on Holt Road near Alabama Highway 251. The accident occurred at 1:40 p.m., the trooper said.
Smith's was the only car involved. He was not wearing a seatbelt, the trooper said.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Joel's father, Tony Smith, posted on his Facebook page that McConnell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
"This afternoon my son Joel was involved in a one-car accident. He was driving alone when his car went off the road and Joel was tragically killed," Tony wrote. "Please pray for his family."
Joel, who worked at University Kia in Huntsville, is survived by his 9-year-old son, McAlister, his mom, Jo Lynn Smith, two brothers Joshua Smith and Brian Smith.
