Police say a female motorist was killed in a crash in the Du Quoin area on Saturday evening.

According to troopers with the Illinois State Police, 17-year-old Du Quoin resident Eugene T. Rodely was headed north on Old Du Quoin Road at an unknown hour. Investigators say Mr. Rodely allowed his sport-utility vehicle to drift into oncoming traffic.

He collided with a Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, driven by 26-year-old Herrin resident Chasity L. Baker, near Eastgate Estates Road. The impact caused Ms. Baker's vehicle to flip into a nearby depression.

Paramedics pronounced Ms. Baker dead on scene. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Herrin resident and passenger Kristan R. Innis was transported to Marshall Browning Hospital for treatment.

Eugene and 17-year-old passenger and Du Quoin residnet Amber A. Knopp were also hurt and went to the same hospital. Officers at the scene issued Eugene with a citation for an unsafe lane change.

The Illinois Department of Transportation states that in 2011, more than 750 fatal crashes have taken place on roadways throughout the state.
