Police released new information regarding an accident on Highway 92 near the Sierra Vista Mall on March 4.

Jacob M. Honeycutt, 22, died from an accidental gunshot wound and crashing his car, police say.

Honeycutt was a soldier at Fort Huachuca from Elizabethton, Tenn. He was training to become a Gray Eagle Unmanned Aerial System Operator.

Around 9 p.m. Honeycutt was traveling north on Highway 92 when he crossed the median and struck two trees before his car came to rest behind the Texas Roadhouse.

Honeycutt was the only person in the car and was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.

During initial medical treatment, it was noted that Honeycutt had a single gunshot wound.

Two handguns were found in the vehicle and based on the initial investigation police believe the gunshot was self-inflicted and an accident.

According to KPHO, family members said Honeycutt accidentally shot himself while driving. According to Honeycutt's family, he was moving the gun from the passenger seat when it happened.

Honeycutt entered the army in July of 2007.

"Jacob was an outstanding human being, non-commissioned officer, and selfless servant of his country. He will forever be missed but never forgotten," Lt. Col Vic Hamilton said.

A memorial service for Sgt. Honeycutt will be held 4 p.m. Thursday at the Main Post Chapel.
