A candlelight vigil was held Tuesday evening for teenager who died after being struck by a car near a Glendale intersection Tuesday morning.

Jeremy Skramstad, 17, previously was a student at Ironwood High School, according to the Peoria Unified School District.

"I'm still in shock. I never thought that God would take him this early," said friend Andrew Capel.

Jose Morales of the Glendale Fire Department said Jeremy Skramstad was struck about 7 a.m. at 61st Avenue and Cactus Road near Ironwood High School.

Glendale police Sgt. Brent Coombs said it appeared Skramstad was crossing Cactus Road at 61st Avenue on the east side of the intersection.

The teen appears to have been in or near the east side crosswalk, but he attempted to cross against a red traffic signal, Coombs said. The Glendale police vehicular crimes unit was investigating.

Neighbors say they're not surprised someone was hurt at the intersection.

"It's kind of a concern seeing kids cross," said neighbor Chris Radoccia.

"Obviously if kids are running a little bit late, they'll cross against the lights," he continued.

Radoccia believes there should be speed zones along the road where drivers are forced to slow down during school hours.

Coombs said the 17-year-old boy was a student in the Peoria Unified School District.

The Peoria Unified School District confirmed Skramstad attended Peoria High School. He previously attended Ironwood High School and also attended a Peoria Unified elementary school, the district said in a statement.

"On behalf of the entire Peoria Unified School District, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family," the statement said. "When we learned of this tragedy, we immediately mobilized our crisis intervention team and counselors who will be available throughout the week on both campuses for students who need support during this difficult time."

The spokesman said the driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and was interviewed. No impairment was suspected, the spokesman said.

Ironwood High School students and friends gathered for the candlelight vigil at Desert Valley Park at Sweetwater and 61st Avenue.
