A 24-year-old city man was held for court Monday on charges he fatally stabbed another man Sept. 21 near Chestnut and Maple streets.

Angel Borrero-Malave of the 200 block of North 10th Street was returned to Berks County Prison without bail following a hearing before District Judge Michael J. Leonardziak. Borrero-Malave is charged with first-degree murder and related offenses.

City police found Jemssy Cabassa-Bracero, 28, Reading, dead in an alley off the 200 block of Maple Street about 6 p.m. after they received 9-1-1 calls of an assault.

Police said the stabbing occurred on the street or sidewalk nearby and was captured by a surveillance camera.

An autopsy showed Cabassa-Bracero died of stab wounds to the back and his death was ruled a homicide, the Berks County coroner's office said.

Police arrested Borrero-Malave a day later after they saw him in a vehicle and followed him to Fifth Street Highway and George Street in Muhlenberg Township, investigators said.

According to investigators:

Cabassa-Bracero was staying with his brother in an apartment nearby on Chestnut Street. A dispute with another tenant in the apartment building led to an argument between that tenant and Cabassa-Bracero on Maple Street.

As the two fought, Borrero-Malave came up behind Cabassa-Bracero and repeatedly stabbed him in the back.

Cabassa-Bracero walked toward his brother's apartment on Chestnut Street, then back to Maple Street and collapsed in an alley.

Police did not know the nature of the dispute between Cabassa-Bracero and the other man.
