It was a somber morning at Bonanza High School after one of its students fell to his death on Memorial Day.
17-year-old Andrew Sasse fell to his death while hiking at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area on Memorial Day.
The school brought in grief counselors to help any students that needed it.
Police say that Sasse left his group of friends to explore on his own. His friends found his body after Sasse did not show up at a meeting point.
Classmates at Bonanza say that Sasse was an outgoing kid, that he was on the student council, played sports and took honors classes.
The death of Sasse is the second one for Bonanza High School in less than a month. Many students are still mourning the death of 15-year-old Marcos Arenas, who was killed during an iPad robbery.
Sasse's family is declining interviews, but released a statement acknowledging the death of their son:
From the Family of Andrew James Sasse
Andrew was truly an amazing son, brother, grandson, nephew, and friend with a contagious smile and zest for life. He will be sorely missed by all who loved him. During this very difficult time, we are being comforted, as much as possible, by loving family and friends and through our unwavering faith.
Andrew was a senior at Bonanza High School and was very active in student council. He was recently named the "Friendliest Bengal" for Senior Superlatives award ceremony.
We appreciate the outreach of support and love from the community and ask that we be afforded privacy during this time of grief – we will not be doing any interviews. The date and time of a service will be announced once details have been confirmed.
A fund is being established to assist with arrangements, and any remaining proceeds will benefit Andrew's passion for education and student leadership through the creation of a scholarship in Andrew's name to benefit a Bonanza High School student. We will share information regarding the fund once it has been established.
Again, we ask for privacy during this time.
