An Odessa High School football standout was killed in a single vehicle rollover early Wednesday morning in the 6500 block of East Highway 191.

Byron Briscoe Monahan, 21, was found lying near his truck when Odessa Police and Fire Departments arrived on the scene at 2:49 a.m., Sgt. Troy Joiner said in a news release.

Joiner said that police determined Monahan was west bound and exited the roadway at a high speed, leaving behind a tire trail and vehicle debris in the grass.

Monahan tried to gain control of his vehicle and overcorrected. The truck rolled over several times and ejected Monahan, who was not wearing a seatbelt, Joiner said.

The pickup stopped on its side between the westbound lanes and north service road.

Monahan was pronounced dead at the scene around 5 a.m. by Ector County Medical Examiners, Joiner said.
OHS Head Football Coach Ron King said Monahan was a part of the foundation that helped rebuild the Bronchos football program.

"I got a call early this morning and was told what had happened," OHS coach Ron King said. "It's a sad deal for his family and a sad day here at OHS for those of us who knew him.
"… He was a big part of our program and did a lot of good things for us and helped us build the foundation of the program that we have today."

Monahan was born July 21, 1989, in Odessa to Jamie (Wortham) Monahan and the late Walter Monahan. After graduating Odessa High in 2007, he was a student at Kilgore Junior College.
He is survived by his mother, Jamie Monahan of Odessa; his girlfriend, Karley Starrett of Kilgore; daughter, Aubree Faith of Odessa; grandparents, Byron and Vanna Lou Wortham of Odessa.

Funeral services are scheduled at 4 p.m. Friday at Belmont Baptist Church with the Rev. John McLemore officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
