At the age of 24, after a long battle with lymphoma that began in September of 2009, John Zachary Means died on January 25, 2010. He died peacefully after a valiant fight. All machines and medicines were disconnected, he took a last breath, and then John rode on angel wings to stand before the throne of God.
John was a true man of God. Although he was not always the most vocal about his faith, it was evident that it was there. He had a way of making everyone around him happier, he always had a smile on his face, and he truly had a servant's heart.. He had a zeal for life, he loved his family and friends, he loved running, and just being himself.
I have known John Zach for about as long as I can remember. We grew up together going to Bloys Campmeeting, a yearly cowboy-style church camp, the first week in August, in the heart of the Davis mountains between Fort Davis and Valentine, Texas. He was always a leader in the Nab, worked diligently serving in his cook shed, sang in the choir, and led small groups. I am blessed by having known John Zach and he will be missed dearly.
