A 24-year-old Illinois man was killed Sunday morning when the snowmobile he was driving crashed into a tree in Lafayette County.

Adam Yates of Winnebago, Ill., was pronounced dead at the scene on the Tri-County snowmobile trail in the town of Willow Springs, according to a release from the state Department of Natural Resources.

The crash was reported at about 8:30 a.m. by a snowmobiler who came upon the crash scene.

According to the DNR news release, Yates failed to negotiate a curve and left the trail, striking a tree.

The Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, Rural Medical Ambulance Service and the DNR responded to the scene.
