A Park Hills man was killed in a crash in Festus this weekend and another man is in police custody facing charges.
According to a press release from the Festus Police Department, Jeffrey John Mueller, 43, of Arnold, was driving a 2005 Ford F-150 north on I-55 at 8:20 p.m. Saturday when he exited the ramp to northbound 67 and struck a 1996 Plymouth Neon driven by James L. Vineyard, 20, of Festus.
Mueller continued through the intersection and then struck a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Troy C. Moeller, 37, of Festus.
Vineyard and his passengers, Cary Johnston, 19, of Park Hills, Aaron M. Chapman, 22, of Hillsboro, and Kimberly A. McCline, 20, of Festus, and Moeller and his passenger, Tracey L. Chambers, 41, of Festus, were all injured and taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center.
Johnston later died and funeral services are being held today at St. Stephen Catholic Church in Richwoods.
Mueller fled the scene and was apprehended shortly afterward by Festus police officers at the Chips 66 gas station.
He was taken into custody and is being charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter and five counts of second-degree assault for operating a vehicle in an intoxicated condition which caused injuries to others.
His bond is set at $100,000 cash only.
According to Case.net, Mueller pleaded guilty in October 2005 to driving while intoxicated as a persistent offender and was placed on five years of supervised probation.
