A 26-year-old man who accidentally shot himself in the head in his Ventura home last week died at a hospital Saturday, officials said.

Duran Shepley was apparently handling a loaded firearm when it discharged and injured him, according to Ventura police.

The incident was reported about 7:05 p.m. Thursday in the 9600 block of Telephone Road.

Officers and Ventura City Fire Department crews responded and found Shepley, who had suffered a gunshot wound, in his home, police said.

He was taken to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was in critical condition until his death.

Police do not think Shepley committed suicide, and no charges will be filed in the incident, officials said.
