The man found dead on Algona school property has been identified, according to a press release from the Algona Police Department. Police believe he committed suicide.

Shane Lee Ballenger, 23, was found dead on the Algona High/Middle School campus grounds around 1:20 a.m. Friday, the press release said. Kossuth County Medical Examiner Investigator Mark Davis was summoned to the scene and pronounced Ballenger dead.

Police believe Ballenger died of a self-inflicted gun wound, according to the press release. However, final cause of death will be determined during an autopsy to be preformed at North Iowa Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, the release said.

The Algona Community School District canceled Friday classes to allow police to investigate the death.

Police were notified of the death when they responded to a 911 call Friday morning regarding suspicious activity at an Algona school property.
