A 2-year-old girl was rescued after being held hostage by a man after he allegedly shot and killed the child's mother at a Marion County apartment complex in a situation that began Friday night and ended Saturday morning.

Dustin Michael Bryant was taken into custody around 8 a.m. Saturday. The 24-year-old man will face numerous felony charges. He was taken into custody on a parole violation.

The incident began around 9:30 p.m. Friday after Turner police were called to an apartment complex in the 7300 block of Third Street SE on a domestic disturbance report.

Authorities on Saturday morning said when they got there they saw a man and woman coming down the stairs from a second story apartment. Bryant allegedly drew a gun and fired several shots at the officers, but missed them.

But the woman, Adrian Nicole Bird, tried to run away at that time and was hit by a bullet. She fell to the ground at that spot and died at the scene. The 23-year-old woman was in a relationship with Bryant.

Bryant then allegedly ran back upstairs and held the girl hostage for many hours.

Residents of the apartment complex were evacuated and were taken to the main fire station in Turner.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office said SWAT units and hostage negotiators tried for hours to get him to surrender and release the child. But, around 5:30 a.m. SWAT units entered the apartment and rescued the child.

The child was not harmed and is now with family members who came to the scene.

Bryant has a long criminal record. He has a number of misdemeanors and twice he spent time behind bars for first-degree burglary. Then on August 31, 2013, he was sentenced to 20 days in jail and 3 years probation for kidnapping.
