The family of a 20-year-old man who was killed in a hit and run accident have announced a memorial in his honor.

Vincent Edward Zellefrow Jr., 20, was skateboarding with a friend when he was struck by a car on southbound Carlsbad Boulevard north of Island Way just before 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Zellefrow died while emergency personnel were treating him, Carlsbad police officers said. The second skateboarder was not injured.

On Sunday, Zellefrow's family told NBC 7 they will hold a memorial for him on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 12:30 p.m. in St. Patrick's Church.

Friends and family stopped by the scene of the crash on Friday to visit a makeshift memorial of flowers and some of Vinnie's favorite things - Diet Coke and jelly beans.

Zellefrow's parents said their son loved to play the drums and had dreams of one day being a music teacher to share his passion with others.

"He was a good son, good friend, very passionate about things. Had a very big passion about music and producing and that was his goal in life, to become a musician," Vince Zellefrow said.

Carlsbad police arrested a 17-year-old woman at 6550 Ponto Drive sometime after the incident.

Officials have not released the suspect's name.

She will be booked into the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI, and felony hit and run, police said.

"She should've been more careful what she's doing especially if she's going to get behind the wheel," said his mother Belinda Zellefrow. "She took the life of an innocent 20-year-old who was just having fun with his friends."

Vinnie had just gotten into skateboarding with friends. Last summer skated more than 50 miles in Maui on a family trip, according to his parents.
