Authorities in western Iowa found a Falls City man dead inside his overturned car this weekend.

The Shelby County Sheriff's office found 21-year-old Tanner Merz' 2003 Ford Taurus upside down in a ditch along a county road south of Irwin early Saturday.

Authorities said the car was sitting on its roof. Paramedics worked to extract Merz from his car, but he died at the scene.

Investigators said Merz was driving north when he lost control of his vehicle.

Merz, who graduated from Falls City High School in 2010, coached wrestling for North Bend Public Schools, including head coaching the junior high team and assistant coaching the high school team, according to his obituary.

He leaves behind his parents, Marc and Sally Merz of Falls City, and three siblings.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Falls City.
