A Philadelphia college student died from a suspected case of meningitis.

Drexel University put its students on alert after sophomore Stephanie Ross was found unresponsive at the house of her sorority, Phi Mu - Beta Tau, on Monday by sorority sisters, the school said in a statement.

She was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

"The Drexel community's thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends," the school said.
Drexel is working with city health officials to identify if the death was caused by meningitis.
Students who came into contact with Ross were given antibiotics, the school said.

Ross majored in mechanical engineering and played for the college's club softball team, according to her Facebook page.

Her most recent post was an announcement last week that she planned to donate eight inches of her hair to a charity that provides wigs for children with cancer.

Other Drexel fraternities and sororities posted their support following the news.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the sisters of Phi Mu - Beta Tau (Drexel University). Your Drexel Greeks are here for you in this hard time," posted fraternity Alpha Chi Rho.
