Roy Martin "Marty" Beck, 43, died after an extended illness, on Feb. 28, 2014, in the Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
Marty was born in Charlotte on Sept. 16, 1970, a son of the late James Benjamin Beck and Jeffrie Suzanne Lynn.
He was a graduate from North Mecklenburg High School, and Cosmetology school in Charlotte. Marty was an active volunteer of the Salvation Army in Charlotte. He took a special interest in assisting with the worship services, and assisting the children who attended Vacation Bible School. At seven years old, he was made a "Junior Soldier", and at fourteen years old a "Sr. Soldier" of the Salvation Army. His grandmother and primary caregiver, Mrs. Maybelle Beck was integral in his affiliation with this. During the time he lived in Sarasota, Florida, he was a cook at Bethesda House. Other special interests included reading, cooking, watching action movies, and spending time at the beach.
Marty is survived by a brother, Jamie Beck; sister Jenny Lynn Beck; maternal aunt Vicki Lynn West, great aunt Christa Overcash; and cousins Kay, Mary Ann, Sarah and Alex Overcash. Doris Wilson and Major Miriam Musgrave, Salvation Army, were special friends and second mothers to Marty.
Major Musgrave will conduct a graveside service on Monday, April 7, 11 a.m., at Elmwood Cemetery in Charlotte.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Men's Shelter of Charlotte at 1210 N. Tryon St. or the Urban Ministry Center of Charlotte at 945 N. College St. or The Salvation Army.
McEwen Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements for the burial.
