A 33-year-old man was found shot to death in a Santa Paula home, and the killer remained at large, police said Thursday.

The victim, Hector Alamillo Jr., of Santa Paula, was found Wednesday afternoon in a home in the 400 block of Grant Line Street, Santa Paula police said.

Authorities received a call about 3:40 p.m. Wednesday about an injured person in a home. Police found Alamillo with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Santa Paula police did not publicly report the homicide until late Thursday morning.

Investigators remained at the home until early Thursday, Police Chief Steve McLean said.

No arrests were made, but detectives were following up on leads, McLean said.

Alamillo, for whom there was an arrest warrant and who was on the Santa Paula police "most wanted" list, was discovered by a resident of the house, but authorities had not found witnesses to the shooting.

What led to the shooting and a possible motive were unclear. Alamillo did not live at the home.

Police Cmdr. Ish Cordero said investigators interviewed neighbors but no one seemed to have heard or seen anything odd.

"Detectives have been canvassing aggressively and pursuing all leads that started to come in," he said.

No other injuries were reported.

Alamillo was wanted on a felony warrant for violation of probation for possession of a controlled substance, according to police.

Anyone with information on the shooting may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or the Santa Paula police hotline at 933-5691.

The incident was the second homicide Wednesday in Ventura County. Devin Morris, 25, of Ventura, was stabbed to death during a fight outside a home north of Ventura that was reported about 12:45 a.m.

Howard Lovett, 18, also of Ventura, was arrested at sheriff's headquarters on suspicion of homicide about 12 hours after the stabbing.

Wednesday's killing was the third in Santa Paula this year. Norma Elizalde was killed by a stray bullet after a fight broke out near her home on March 29. An arrest was made, but police are looking for more suspects.

Also in March, Ashley Moran, 21, was found dead on a secluded slope in Obregon Park. No arrests have been made.
