Waukegan City Clerk Artis Yancey died Wednesday morning after collapsing at his home, the city's mayor said.

Rescue crews were called to his home just before 8 a.m. but Yancey, 54, was unresponsive, said Mayor Wayne Motley. Yancey was rushed to Vista East Medical Center in Waukegan, Motley said, but attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

Yancey was a veteran public servant, serving as a Waukegan police officer, rising to chief in 2009. He was appointed Lake County coroner in 2011 after the occupant of the office was convicted of a felony. He lost the primary to hold the coroner's office and he was elected Waukegan city clerk last year.

"Art was a very good man, a very well-respected man," Motley said. "He was a great friend and he will certainly be missed in our community."
