A 16-year-old killed in a Nowata County accident early Wednesday has been officially identified as Lyrick Mathis of Nowata, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Friday.
Mathis died at 7:01 p.m. Wednesday, reports show.
The accident that claimed the teens's life occurred at 1:29 a.m. on Nowata County Road 19, four miles west and two miles north of Nowata.
Also injured in the accident was a 16-year-old Bartlesville resident, who was reportedly transported to Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville and treated and released.
When contacted about unofficial reports of Mathis' death on Thursday, law enforcement officials said they were unable to confirm her death or release more information.
The name of the passenger in the vehicle has not been released.
OHP troopers say Mathis was westbound on County Road 19 when she lost control of the vehicle and struck an embankment on the driver's side. She was pinned in the vehicle for approximately one hour before being freed by the Delaware and Nowata fire departments, using the Jaws of Life, and was life flighted to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa.
Mathis' condition at the time of the accident is listed on the OHP reports as "apparently normal," while the cause of collision is stated as "unsafe speed for type of roadway (gravel, dirt, etc.)."
Troopers say seatbelts in the vehicle were in use and the driver's side airbag deployed when the collision occurred.
