Lexington Police have arrested an 18-year-old Lexington man in connection with the stabbing death of a Dutch Fork High School student following Monday night's Dutch Fork vs. Lexington High School basketball game.
Police say Kierin Marcellus Dennis fatally stabbed 17-year-old DaVon Capers during a fight near the Cook-Out on Main Street in downtown Lexington. Dennis is being held without bond at the Lexington County Detention Center on charges of murder and possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
Police received several tips from witnesses at the scene concerning the incident, and evidence and information gathered in the investigation led to the arrest, a news release from the department stated.
A Facebook page belonging to Dennis indicates he is a member of the Lexington High School Class of 2013 and is employed at Burger King.
According to Green, the fight stemmed from an argument that took place after the boy's basketball game at Lexington High School earlier in the evening. The crime scene was approximately 3.6 miles from the high school.
Lt. Matt Davis added more details Tuesday afternoon, saying investigators believe there was a verbal altercation between two groups a few weeks ago.
Two groups of people then exchanged "some words" after Monday night's game and then everybody left. Davis said it's unclear if the same people were involved in both altercations.
Both groups involved in Monday's altercation ended up at Cook-Out.
A short time later, police were called to the fast food restaurant's parking lot and found Capers wounded. He was immediately transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Capers was a senior linebacker on Dutch Fork's state championship football team.
Students and staff gathered Tuesday morning in the school's gymnasium to hold a moment of silence for Capers. The flag flies at half staff in front of the school, which is located in northwest Richland County.
Lexington High School's athletic director and head football coach Joshua Stepp said via Twitter there didn't appear to be any trouble at the game. "happened off campus I have no clue...there was absolutely ZERO problem @ game, before during or after...seamless...," wrote Stepp.
He also offered his support to the school. "Thoughts & prayers out to the entire Dutch Fork community for their loss...we are all praying for you," wrote Stepp.
District Superintendent Stephen Hefner released the following statement Tuesday morning:
"The entire District Five family is saddened to learn of the death of one of its students. DaVon Nathaniel Capers was a senior at Dutch Fork High School and a member of the football team. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the student's family as law enforcement officials continue their investigation into his untimely death. Plans are underway to have grief counselors available for students and staff needing assistance as we all come to terms with this tragedy."
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is assisting the Lexington Police Department with the investigation.
