More information has been released about the final days of a Navarro College student who died Thursday evening shortly after being arrested and taken to the Navarro County jail.

Ahjah Dixon, 23, was reported to the campus police on Wednesday after violating the dorm's no-alcohol policy, according to campus officials.

According to Navarro College chief of police Kraig Hawkins, residence life staff members were called to Dixon's room Wednesday evening by a roommate who stated Dixon wanted her to purchase alcohol. Both residence life staff and campus police responded and saw bottles of alcohol in the room.

Her roommate alerted the dorm staff of the problem and she said that Dixon had asked her to buy alcohol for her. The Navarro College Police responded to the dorm and saw bottles of alcohol in her room, according to a press release by Donna Parish, college spokeswoman.

"After initial questioning of Dixon, campus police officers noted she appeared to be under the influence. Upon further investigation, Dixon surrendered a Bible that contained a white, powdery substance. A field test was conducted and tested positive for cocaine," the release states.

The suspected cocaine and alcohol were both seized, and Dixon was taken by ambulance to the Navarro Regional Hospital emergency room for evaluation. That same night, she was released and returned to her dorm room.

On Thursday, a warrant was issued, and she was arrested on campus and taken to the jail.

"The warrant was for possession of controlled substance," said Navarro County Sheriff Les Cotten. "She was brought to the jail about 4:16 p.m. and placed in a holding cell with three other females, also waiting to be booked in."

Around 6 p.m., she told the jailers she needed some fresh air and she was taken to the east side rec yard. She asked for a drink of water, which she was given, and then she began having a seizure of some kind, Cotten said.

"The nurse did what she could, and requested an ambulance," Cotten said.

She was again taken to the emergency room and she was pronounced dead at 6:54 p.m.

Her body has been taken to Dallas for an official autopsy, as ordered by Justice of the Peace Bob McQuary.

"Navarro College Police Department notified her mother," Cotten said. "The investigation is continuing today with Texas Ranger Jason Bobo, our deputies and the Navarro College police."

The student had two drivers' licenses, one from New Jersey and one from Texas. Her college application listed Grand Prairie as her home. Dixon was a first-semester student this spring at Navarro and was already on probation, Parish said.

"They had a previous incident with her on Feb. 3 and she was on probation because she'd violated the alcohol policy," Parish said, saying Dixon was recommended for counseling, but failed to attend.
In accordance with state policy, campus police, residence life and county officials were interviewed Thursday by a member of the Texas Rangers. The white, powdery substance confiscated during Wednesday evening has been sent to the state lab for further testing, authorities said.
