The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has identified the victim of a Saturday morning (Jan. 31) house fire in Central City as Erica Moten, 28, and confirmed that she died of smoke inhalation.

She was found upstairs in a shotgun double at 2403 S. Saratoga St., according to Capt. Edwin Holmes of the New Orleans Fire Department. The fire was reported at 9:35 a.m. by neighbors, and when firefighters arrived, smoke was billowing from the structure, and flames were streaming from windows and doors.

A man told firefighters that he leaped from a second-floor window to escape the fire but couldn't persuade Moton to follow him. Firefighters found her unresponsive and unconscious outside a bedroom after they entered the home while fighting the fire, Holmes said.

She was taken by New Orleans EMS to a local hospital, where she died. The man was admitted to the hospital for treatment smoke inhalation.
