The Canmore man killed in an avalanche in Kananaskis Country Saturday was no stranger to skiing and the outdoors.

Mounties identified the 34-year-old slide victim, who was backcountry skiing in the Mount Black Prince area of Peter Lougheed Provincial Park when he was caught, as Benjamin John Thackeray.

The avalanche happened just after 3 p.m.

He was a member of the Nakiska Ski Resort ski patrol, and operated a rafting tour company.

Kananaskis RCMP say Thackeray and his group did have adequate experience and equipment.

Another from the group suffered a leg injury, according to Calgary EMS.

The man's death came one day after officials with Parks Canada and Kananaskis Country issued a special avalanche warning, and that warning has since been extended through Tuesday.

The warning includes Banff, Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper national parks and Kananaskis Country.
