The Medina County Sheriff's Office is investigating the death of a Wadsworth Middle School eighth-grader.
Capt. Ken Baca said Benjamin Parke, 13, died Tuesday of what appeared to be a "self-inflicted gunshot wound."
"None of the evidence we've collected so far has indicated foul play," he said.
Baca said the investigation is ongoing.
The Sheriff's Office declined to release further details.
Wadsworth Middle School Principal Eric Jackson sent an Alert Now call to families in the district informing them of Benjamin's death.
"His parents have stated that he died in a tragic accident and have requested that we honor their privacy during this difficult time," Jackson said in the call and on the district's website.
Crisis counselors from the district's crisis response team and the Medina County Crisis Response Team met with students and staff Wednesday and will continue services at the middle school as needed.
Wadsworth Superintendent Andy Hill said several families attended a 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday at the middle school with members of Alternative Paths and Solutions Behavioral Healthcare, who discussed how to deal with grief.
"We're heartbroken that we lost one of our students," Hill said. "Alternative Paths and Solutions were a big help to us yesterday to meet the needs of the students."
