A man charged in a deadly car accident on Wednesday is a former Jacksonville police officer.

Jan Friis III was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to stop at a duly erected stop sign after the crash that killed 19-year-old Hunter Kennedy.

Troopers say Friis ran a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 241 and Sarecta Road near Beulaville, striking Kennedy's pickup truck on the side.

Friis was a Jacksonville police officer for three years, but resigned in January.

Last fall, police say Friis shot a man during a police chase in Jacksonville. That man's wife said her husband was trying to get her to the hospital after she became unconscious. The most serious charges against the man were later dropped.

District Attorney Ernie Lee said there was insufficient evidence to show Friis used excessive or unreasonable force to stop the man's vehicle.

The Attorney General's Office says Friis is no longer a certified law enforcement officer in the state.
