Andrea Marie Berg, 42, struggled with addiction and was a member of the Hope Mission community in Edmonton's inner city, serving in the church and singing on their worship team.
Berg, the city's latest homicide victim, was found earlier this week with her legs bound and tape over her mouth, killed by blunt force.
"She was loved, cared about, and we are grieving her loss," said a statement issued by Hope Mission.
"She served in many areas in the community church, but what she loved most of all was to sing."
Cora Shaw knew Berg and called her death frightening.
"It's been really, really difficult for all of us, and to lose her in the way that we lost her as well," she said.
"Andrea was loving. She cared about everyone. When she walked into a room she lit it up."
Berg's body was found early Tuesday in a shopping cart in an alley near 124th Street and 113th Avenue.
An autopsy done Thursday confirmed she was the victim of a homicide.
Police continue to investigate and have asked for help from anyone who may have information on her death.
